Kate Beckinsale Battles 'Canary Black' Producers Over Negligence and Unsafe Set Conditions

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale has taken her fight against the producers of her upcoming thriller 'Canary Black' to court, accusing them of creating a hazardous work environment that led to severe injuries. The legal battle centers around claims of negligence, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress against Anton Entertainment and producer John Zois.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, details how Beckinsale and her team repeatedly warned the producers about unsafe conditions on set. These included excessively long shooting days, sometimes stretching to fifteen hours, coupled with inadequate equipment and medical staff to manage the high physical demands. A crucial element of the complaint is the failure to inform Beckinsale about the stunts she was expected to perform, which she often discovered only moments before execution.

In December 2022, the fraught conditions culminated in Beckinsale suffering a complex meniscus tear in her left knee. Despite medical instructions prohibiting certain physical activities, Beckinsale alleges that she was repeatedly coerced into performing stunts that aggravated her injury.

Correspondence between Beckinsale’s representatives and the producers highlighted the dangerous working environment. An email from Beckinsale's agent expressed frustration over the lack of actionable steps to address the situation: "No one is actually taking real action to put a plan in place to fix this situation", the email stated. In response, Zois acknowledged the pressure and unsustainable pace of production, but changes were reportedly scant.

Seeking both general and special damages, Beckinsale is pursuing justice through a jury trial. This legal battle shines a light on broader issues of safety and accountability in the film industry, as Beckinsale joins a chorus of voices advocating for safer working conditions.
