Rust Director Joel Souza Reflects on Tragedy and Alec Baldwin's Reality Show
Alec BaldwinJoel Souza, the director of the Western film "Rust", recently opened up about his experiences following the tragic shooting incident on set that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and his own injury. During an interview with The Guardian, Souza was humorously dismissive of his interest in watching Alec Baldwin's recent reality show, "The Baldwins", saying, "I think I was busy hitting myself in the face with a frying pan that night". This comment stems from the continued aftermath of the incident where Baldwin accidentally discharged a gun loaded with live ammunition, leading to the tragedy.
In the years following the incident, Souza has spoken openly about his struggle to come to terms with the events of that day. Recollecting those moments, he admitted, “I don’t remember what was going through my head. One of the stranger aspects is that it felt like I was lying there for five minutes. Apparently, it was half an hour.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, "Rust" was completed and is set to be released in theaters, a decision made in part due to Hutchins' family's wishes for the film to be finished. Souza expressed conflicting emotions about returning to the project but ultimately decided he couldn't let someone else take over.
Throughout this ordeal, Baldwin's reality show has chronicled his own struggles with guilt and trauma, including his diagnosis of PTSD. However, reactions to the show have been mixed; Hutchins' family criticized it as potentially an attempt to garner sympathy amidst ongoing legal battles.
Reflecting on the project, Souza expressed deep regrets, admitting candidly, “You think about the chain of events that started that morning. Bad decision after bad decision was made. I wish I never wrote the damn movie.” Despite these challenges, the film is dedicated to Halyna Hutchins' memory, honoring her contribution and the impact of her tragic loss on all involved.
